We all know that here in Toronto and across the country, shelters are overcapacity !

​

By working in collaboration with shelters and other partners, the

« Second Chance » program aims to train and support homeless individuals, particularly those in shelters, through workshop, training, job assistance and more. The objective of this program is to support 100 people minimum per year that lives in a shelter by enabling them to transition out and to reduce shelter overcapacity.

What is homelessness ?

​

The definition by Canadian Observatory on Homelessness (2017) is widely used and defines homelessness as « the situation of an individual, family or community without stable, safe, permanent, appropriate housing, or the immediate prospect, means and ability of acquiring it. »

 

What are the causes of homelessness?

​

There are many possible causes/factors? of homelessness such as: structural factors (e.g., the lack of adequate income, accessibility to affordable housing and health supports and / or discrimination.) ; the housing market ; system failures (e.g., difficulty transitioning from child welfare, inadequate discharge planning for people leaving institutions

(e.g., such as hospitals, correctional facilities, mental health institutions and addictions facilities and lack of support for immigrants and refugees.) ; personal circumstances and relational problems ; domestic violence and poverty ( e.g.,  due to low income, lack of a good education, the lack of financial literacy and others).

How many people are homeless in Canada?

 

According to the State of Homelessness in Canada 2016 report, it was estimated that at least 235.000 Canadians experience homelessness within a given year.

The number of Canadians who experience homelessness on any given night in Canada is estimated to be at least 35000 individuals.

  • Those experiencing chronic homelessness: 4.000 to 8.000

  • Those experiencing episodic homelessness: 6.000 to 22.000

  • Those who are transitionally homelessness: 176.000 to 188.000

How many people are homeless in Toronto?

​

According to the city of Toronto on January 2024:

  • 10.999 people were actively homeless in shelters

  • 5628, of this population were immigrants/refugees (accounting for about 50% of the homeless population in shelters);

  • 5888 were chronic homeless (53.5%). Therefore, more than 50% of those who lived in shelters were more likely to return to shelters.

 

How many unhoused people (Homeless) died per week in Toronto?

 

The average was three deaths per week!

New Toronto Public Health (TPH) released data on Sept. 28 stating that 79 unhoused individuals passed away within the first six months of 2023 – an average of three people per week. The median age of those who died, included people staying within and outside of the shelter system, which consisted of 52 males and 48 females. The 4 main causes of death involved: drug toxicity (46% in 2023), unknown factors (38% in 2023), cancer (5% in 2023) and suicide (3% in 2023).
